SINGAPORE: Singaporean Ram Tiwary, who was acquitted last Friday of murdering his two flatmates, is being held in Sydney by immigration authorities there.
Australian immigration authorities said the 33-year-old is being held at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre, which is located in a western suburb of Sydney.
Tiwary, who spent more than eight years behind bars, was released last Friday.
He was then handed over to Sydney’s Department of Immigration & Citizenship.
The Australian authorities said that those who are released from custody and do not hold a valid Australian visa have to leave the country.
Channel NewsAsia understands this depends on how long it will take to get valid travel documents, such as a passport.
Singaporeans Tay Chow Lyang and Tony Tan Poh Chuan were stabbed and clubbed to death with a baseball bat in 2003.
