SINGAPORE – An online initiative has raised at least S$66,000 for the families of the two workers killed in the Bugis MRT accident.
The donation drive was launched by several prominent bloggers, including Mr Benjamin Lee (Mr Miyagi), Ms Adrianna Tan (Popagandhi) and Mr Lee Kin Mun (mrbrown), with donations coordinated by Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), a non-profit group that promotes equitable treatment for migrant workers in Singapore.
TWC2 announced that around 440 persons had donated when the donation window closed last Friday.
They said that over the last four days, TWC2 had met with family members of the two deceased workers, Mr Meng Huaiyou and Mr Dou Chunjie, to explain the background of the donations and hand them the first instalment in cash. Subsequent instalments will be transferred to the families within the next week or two, TWC2 said.
TWC2 also said that they received signed undertakings from the deceased workers’ next of kin acknowledging that the donations are meant for the estate of the deceased persons, and thus will ultimately benefit all family members entitled to a share of the estate.
