It's hate at first sight for Adam (Farid Kamil) and Maya (Lisa Suriani).
It’s hate at first sight for Adam (Farid Kamil) and Maya (Lisa Suriani).

I’M Not Single is Pierre Andre’s second outing as a director that takes a look at the younger generation’s perspective on arranged marriages.

It tells the story of two opinionated individuals in their early twenties who are forced into marriage by their families.

Adam (Farid Kamil) and Maya (Lisa Suriani) have nothing in common. Their marriage turns out to be a love-hate relationship.

Meanwhile, Maya’s boyfriend Dani (Awal Shaari) fails to come to terms with the marriage and tries to win her back.

There is nothing new about this movie. It is reminiscent of other edgy romantic comedies such as What Happens in Vegas, Knocked Up and 1990’s While you Were Sleeping.

But Pierre’s direction provides a touch that is both refreshing and youthful.

He also did a brilliant job in casting the lead characters.

There is great chemistry between Farid and Lisa. Farid is a great replacement for Pierre who had to withdraw as Adam due to his obligations as a director.

He does a good job of balancing his character as an egoistic young man on the surface who is loving and kind underneath.

Meanwhile, new girl on the block, Lisa of Goodbye Boys’ fame, proves to be a sweetheart in her first leading role in a movie.

Rough at the edges, the girl is indeed a gem in the making. Her performance can be described as almost perfect as a hard-headed lass with a rebellious streak.

The supporting cast also does a great job. Awal, Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan and Ruminah Sidek give the film much needed support.

However, I was not so impressed with the roles of Ahmad Idham and David Teo who play salesmen. I also found Intan Ladyana to be a bit stiff in her role as a free spirited girl who seeks love and adventure.

If you’re a fan of romantic comedies, I’m Not Single might just be for you.
