GENTING HIGHLANDS: Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian 2007 saw Asmawi “Mawi” Ani repeating his feat the previous year when he was voted Most Popular Artiste.

Garnering 190,268 votes from Berita Harian readers, he fought off the challenge from several strong contenders like singer Datuk Siti Nurhaliza and actor and comedian Saiful Apek in the annual awards held at the Arena of Stars here last night.

The Akademi Fantasia 3 champion took home a RM185,000 Peugeot 407, jewellery worth RM150,000, including an 18-carat white gold and diamond necklace from Habib Jewels, and electrical goods from JVC.

Mawi was also named Popular Male Singer while Siti was Popular Female Singer.

The Popular Group/Duo award went to Sofaz.

Aznil Nawawi and Fara Fauzana defended their Popular Male and Female TV Host titles respectively.

Faizal Ismail won the Popular Male Radio Presenter while Fara Fauzana, the Popular Female Radio Presenter.

The Popular Male and Female Comedian awards went to Saiful Apek and Sheila Rusly while the Popular New Male and Female Artistes were Dafi Ismail and Mila Jirin respectively. Nasyid group Rabbani held on to their Popular Nasyid Singer title.

Popular Film Actor was Rusdi Ramli while the Popular Film Actress was Fasha Sandha. Rosyam Nor bagged the Popular TV Actor award while Dynas Mokhtar won Popular TV Actress.

A special award for lifetime achievement in show business was presented to singer, composer and songwriter M. Nasir.

The awards ceremony, broadcast live over TV3, was hosted by television personality, singer and actress Fauziah “Ogy” Ahmad Daud and presenter-cum-comedienne Raja Azura.

The winner in each category received a trophy and RM20,000 worth of jewellery.

Singers Amy of Search, Anuar Zain, Atilia, Awie, Ella and Ramli Sarip, among others, performed their hit songs.

Present were New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd group editor-in-chief Datuk Hisha-muddin Aun, Berita Harian group editor Datuk Manja Ismail and NSTP chief executive officer Datuk Syed Faisal Albar.
